Hi guys,

I have the Academy 1/72 'Kanonen Vogel' of Rudel, Summer 1944 Russia. Colours indicated are RLM 70 & 71 over RLM 65.

So 70 is Dark Green and 71 is Black Green.

I'm just a bit confused because all the images show a khaki looking tone for black green 71. Is this correct?

cheers

A first note .... the camouflage consisted of the RLM70 Schwarzgrün and RLM 71 Dunkelgrün on tops and the RLM65 Hellblau on undersides. So you confused the Schwarzgrün with the Dunkelgrün colour.

Secondly the art at the top box can't be the color sample for the paints. The colours that were used for printing and can be seen there don't much the true ones usually. It is not only about the particular box art but about all of them.

Hey Wojtek, sorry I got the numbers wrong so yes the darker shade is black green 70. However the lighter colour 71 still looks khaki / olive drab...not just on the box art but on most of the built models I see online.

This is one of the few that seems to match your colour swatch

I see. The RLM 71 could have a couple of tones. Even the German RLM instructions with the colour samples show them of slightly different tinges. Below an excerption from 1941 instruction. The discription of the colour says that it was a dark green with the olive tinge. Unfortunately many paint manufacturers offer their own variants in the tinge of the colour. Not always correct but always called the orginal. However the final effect of applying depends on the background colour, using of the primer or not and thickness of the paint layer, etc ... Therefore I would follow the chips from the instruction rather than following the manufacturer's assurance.

This 71 does have a slight more olive tone.... but still much darker. I suppose the variances you state gives some flexibility to the final product I use.... cheers Francis

Yes. The RLM 71 and the RLM70 weren't too much contrasted colours. In the pics the different tones of the colours aren't noticed mostly. Here a couple of the quite modern scans ... see the link below. It may be worth to have a look at it.

Cool....the 109 looks low contrast but pic is washed out a bit........ the He111 photo looks better quality and the contrast is stronger on what can be seen on the h stab.

Also the lower 6 colour sampling also has a much more distinct olive tone to 71 than 71 in the 3 samples above.
