If ever there was a long-shot request for information, this is it. So long in fact it'll need a good ol' fashioned medieval Long Bow to get it out there.

My father was stationed at Cherry Tree Barracks in Colchester during his stint at National Service with the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) in the early 1950s. One incident he recalls (with hindsight a tragedy) was helping to break up a Spitfire that was by then located in the barracks fire-training area, possibly in 1951. Even then, taking a large axe to the aircraft felt wrong and despite trying to save something significant, ended up with a matchbox sixed piece of the front screen.

The challenge is this - does anyone out there remember it, maybe also took part (he'd love to hear from anyone), know of why the Spitfire was there and more importantly, any clues as to its identity? We realise it's one out of 20,000 'ish so finding its movement card with nothing to go on will be nigh on impossible, but who knows - we might kick over a stone and find gold.

Any clues, however small, would be gratefully received. You've all helped out so much on previous requests for info, so fingers crossed and third time lucky.
