Hi I wonder if anyone may be able to help me.
I am tracing the history of the Spitfire W3248. I have been through the Operational Record Books and got all the info from 611 Squadron and 64 Squadrons, pilots and missions etc.
On the 9th January 1942 it goes to 1CRU which I think is Morris Motors Cowley for modifications, but where does it go after that, is there a way of finding this out? would it go back to Hornchurch ? I have been through some of the 64 squadron records but yet to find it after 3rd January 1942
-----These are my notes - I know I have lots to research yet but after its modifications I am guessing it would be allocated to another unit but I have no idea where to look to find out ...
- 9-1-1942 - 1CRU (civilian repair unit) - MM Morris Motors Cowley - mods, first clipped wing, Spit re-designate LFvb RAE
- 14-4-1942 - external mirror drag tris
- 8-42 - G Suffix serial lifted
- 30-9-1942 - after forced landing on 19-9-1942 cockpit sight parameter tris and clear view windscreen
- 12-42 - allergens tris
- 1-43 - HAL - Heston Aircraft Unit
- 9-43 - 10-43 - cockpit missing tris at alt RAE (Royal Aircraft Establishment)
- 2-44 - tris with new type cockpit panels, comparison tris with Spider Crab (Vampire Proto) Metro CommSq
- 3-9-44 - 29 MU (RAF High Ercall) Reid Sigrist refurb (A Reid and Sigrist refurb refers to an aircraft that was refurbished or modified by Reid and Sigrist, a British engineering company known primarily for its work in aviation and electronics during the mid-20th century.)
- 4-12-46 - Dunsfold
- 15 -10 -47 to Portugal
I am very new to researching planes, I am used to researching people, so I apologise if I am asking a silly question.
This particular spitfire was bought by the town I grew up in, so I would like to trace its history from its first flight till its last - I believe it was struck off in 1952
Thank you so much for any assistance you may be able to give
Ros
