I think the 3 mph speed is what they determined was its walking speed. The 3 mph speed is where they figure the most economical movement occurs. There is no reason indicated in the Dutch research that T-Rex could not have run faster. All the T-Rex would have to do is change the muscle tension on the base of/along the tail to change the rhythm to suit the run, and/or use the length/rate of foot steps to maintain balance at a faster gait. Most creatures with tails do this, even the ones who do not use it for balance when walking. Humans have no tails, so we maintain balance by leaning forward and adjusting the length/rate of foot steps.
 
My fantasy was a half track in traffic with someone riding shotgun with twin .50s. This was caused by my being a paper boy and the paper station was next to Southern Scrap. The scrap yard bought half tracks ten at a time to use, modified, as cherry pickers. When it broke, they mod another till gone and order ten more. At 14, it took all my strength to open the hood (half inch thick steel), but stand back when you let it go.
 
We had an M-3 sitting a yard here in Hammond until three years ago. A friend I have mentioned on the forum, Herb, bought an M-3 stock. It had been used at a WW2 aux field to pull acft out of the mud if they went off runway. The last use was when an F-80 tried to land and ran off the end. The M-3 was parked in the weeds and overgrown and forgotten. Gasoline has a very bad smell after several decades.
 
The speed of the Trex will depend on whether it's a Predator or a Scavenger.

Because something that big is not going to be an ambush hide and seek type.

So you would think as a Predator it would need to have some runner ability. If it's a scavenger then the average carcass goes 0mph so it be fine.

Good eating on a dead brontosaurus.

My only concern with the very large herbivores is they must be deforestation machines. They would strip a forest in no time.
