The only way Japan could take Midway would be if the US carriers lost. This in no way would bring any kind of peace agreement with the US. America was mad and building up.
Then Midway would probably become what Gualalcanal was. But much harder for Japan to resupply, build up and defend.
There is also Austraila, the South Pacific Islands, China, India, the Aleutian's to worry about. And Japan is stretched pretty thin as it is now.
 
This is June of 42. Singapore and the Phillipines had just fell a few months before, Japan was advancing across Burma, threating India.

We were just begining to send re-inforcements to Austrailia. We hadn't established much forces of any strenght yet on the South Pacific islands.
A draw at the Battle of the Coral Sea. We may be angry, but up to this point Americans had not heard a lot of good news coming from the Pacific.
 
Coral Sea was a wash but we at least turned two task forces North and prevented further landings.
