The Famous Merlin Engine Sound

What exactly gives the Merlin engine it's famous and distinctive sound? I suspect it's the whine of the two-stage supercharger, but I'm not certain.

Good question, I suspect it's down to many things, not least is the type of Airframe it's fitted to. The combination of Prop,exhaust,reduction gear and intake noises make up that wonderful sound
