If the aircraft were shipped by freighter, they would have been done so crated, as was done in many cases.
The advantage of shipping aboard the Ranger, is that they were able to go immediately to the front with their pilot instead of being offloaded one at a time, trucked to a depot, uncrated, assembled and checked out before being turned over to their pilot (who most likely came over on a different ship) - that could take weeks.
