Hi!
I am researching my great uncle Walter Shofner who perished on the USS Peary in Darwin Bay Australia Feb 19th, 1942. I'm looking for (and knowing it's likely impossible to find) photos of the crew, anything where I might find a photo of him. Or any photos of the ship in action. I have a few photos of the ship being attacked, but any additional photos of that are welcome as well.

I definitely will! I'm hoping to write a historical fiction book using some of the research. I've got a stack of books on the pacific fleet battles and the Darwin attack specifically that I need to read through, but I'm compiling as much of the photos in a database now while I can find them.

I don't know details of burial or death dates; the ABMC website lists Solomon and Aders as died 25/11/45, implying they were also lost on USS Pecos, though I don't believe that was the case. Fields and Wagley were buried at sea off Darwin on 18/01/42.

Thus of 28 who contracted malaria, 9 died, including 2 who were transferred to USS Pecos for treatment and were killed when that vessel was sunk). I don't know details of burial or death dates; the ABMC website lists Solomon and Aders as died 25/11/45, implying they were also lost on USS Pecos, though I don't believe that was the case. Fields and Wagley were buried at sea off Darwin on 18/01/42.

Charles thank you for putting your list of USS Peary personnel on this forum. Maybe you are interested to know that Melvin Edward Duke BM2/c 359-78-14 Berrimah Hosp. returned to Darwin many times since the Peary was sunk. Bombing of Darwin podtour: a journey back to 1942 He is pictured in the photographs on this site. I volunteer at the Darwin Military Museum and they hold donations received from Melvin Duke.
I am currently attempting to convert and update the online Exhibition that was produced by Northern Territory Library for the 60th Anniversary into some form of hard copy and online biographical story of those who lost their lives on and after the bombing of Darwin 19 February 1942 for the Museum. The Library although still having the data it is a little difficult to locate a whole document. Your list is a great help.
