The way ol' Vlad flinched when they suddenly appeared was classic.

My guess was that it was a warning.

I would guess that Putin is completely inexperienced at having fighters and bombers buzz him without warning. And maybe he recalls that during the attempted coup against Boris Yeltsin that the head of the Soviet Air Force was summoned to the Kremlin and left orders that if his people did not hear from him in 4 hours to blow the Kremlin off the map.

The F-35's escorted Putin out of US airspace when he departed.
