To be honest, if you're not sure what the device/part is, what keyword would you use for your search?

It seems to me that the OP made the right decision and went where they could get accurate and detailed info right off the bat

Well, I do use google before asking. Since I didn't know the name of the parts, I had to search using the visual description, but nothing came up:

A technical question for Calum Douglas and others. What is the effect of the cold ram air (especially at altitude) on only the lead exhaust pipe and the last being the hottest?

it must work this way, also putting serious thermal stress on the first one or two of exhausts and not helping much with cooling others, the fact is just Germans have used such solution with remaining nation rather avoided fairing around exhaust pipes, i would take a risk with saying that was overengineered solution....

That was my thought also. It must have had some benefit because the idea stayed in production.

Cast iron does remarkably well as exhaust manifolds, stacks and ejectors.

Cast Iron can handle the exhaust temps while being exposed to cold air and/or rain.
