Grumman didn't always produce the prettiest aircraft, but by god they were often rugged and robust and often had a way of getting their pilots back home. Even Japanese pilots were amazed how much lead they would pump into some F4F's and F6F's and they'd hold together.

The A6M was prettier, and it was faster, and more maneuverable all but the top 31 mph of the F4F's performance envelope, but it burst into flames with one or two well placed shots.
