The Type VIIC boat U-432 left La Pallice on 14 February 1943 for iys eighth war cruise, under the command of Kapitamleutnant Herman Eckhardt, and torpedoed the disabled destroyer HMS Harvester, causing heavy loss of life. However, it was then depth-charged to the surface by the French corvette Aconit and subjected to gunfire, as shown in this photograph. Twenty-six crew members were killed, including the commander, but twenty were rescued to become prisoners. Ref: ADM 199/2060
