U-665

On the afternoon of 22 March 1943 the crew of Whitley G.R.Mk.V (Z6950) of No.10 Operational Training Unit, flown by Sergeant J.A. Marsden, from St.Eval, Cornwall, spotted a U-boat on the surface about 300 miles west of St. Nazaire. Marsden turned and dropped six depth charges, which straddled the U-boat. It was the The Type VIIC boat U-665 (shown here), commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Jurgen Haupt. It was on its first war cruise, having left Kiel on 20 February 1943 and already sank one merchant vessel. It was lost with all forty-six crew members. Ref: AIR 28/741
