1st August 1943 took off a number of 117 Liberators of 5 bombardament groups from various airfields located in an area of Benghazi, Lybia for a second air-raid against the oil reffineries in Ploesti, Romania (Operation "Tidak Wave"). This raid, managed in a very low altitude, was very tragic - 54 planes did not return.The depicted Liberator B-24D-85-CO num. 42-40684 (with group's name "Liberandos") was a raid-leader and belonged to k 376th Bombardament Group of 9th Army Air Force USAAF. Yellow-lined arm. badge was used in the year 1943 only in North African theatre, the British roundel was a help identification sign.
