U-189

The Type IXC/40 boat U-189 left Kristiansund South on 3 April 1943 under the command of Korvettenkapitan Hellmut Kurrer to report on ice limits in the area of the Denmark Strait. It was spotted on 23 April about 425 miles west-south-west if Iceland by Liberator G.R.Mk.III (FL923) of No.120 Sqd flown by Flying Officer John K. Moffatt, from Reykjavik. The Liberator dropped four depth charges in the face of flak, whereupon the U-boat stopped and circled to port. Moffatt came back and dropped two more depth charges. The U-boat sank, leaving many men in the water, but none of her crew of fifty-four survived. Ref: AIR 15/471
