U-569

The Type VIIC boat U-569 left La Pallice on 19 April 1943 for another war cruise, under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Hans Johannsen. It was found on the surface on 22 May 1943 about 600 miles south-west of Greenland by TBF-1 Avengers of Composite Squadron VC-1 operating from the escort carrier USS Bogue, which was sailing with convoy ON184. The first to attack was Lieutenant (jg) W.F. Chamberlain, whose bombs straddled the target. Then Lieutenant (jg) H. Roberts in another Avenger continued the attack. The U-boat submerged but then resurfaced and was subjected to gunfire before finally sinking. Twenty-one of the crew were lost but twenty-five were rescued, including the commander. Ref: ADM 199/1408
