U-465

The Type VIIC boat U-465 left St. Nazaire on 29 April 1943 under the command of Kapitanleutnant Heinz Wolf for a fourth war cruise, but on 2 May was attacked by Sunderland G.R.Mk.III (DV968) of No.461 (RAAF) Sqd, flown by Flight Lieutenant E.C.Smith from Pembtoke Dock, Wales. This made two attacks, one of which is shown here, dropping four depth charges on each occasion. These straddled the U-boat and about fifteen men were seen jumping into the water on the second occasion. However, the U-boat was destroyed and there were no survivors from the crew of forty-eight.
