U-617

The Type VIIC boat U-617 left Toulon on 28 August 1943 for its eighth war cruise under the command of Kapitanleutnant Albrecht Brandi and sank the destroyer HMS Puckeridge on 8 September. However, on 12 September it was depth-charged by two Leigh Light equipped Wellingtons of No.179 Sqd, flown from North Camp, Gibralter by Squadron Leader D.B. Hodgkinson and Pilot Officer W.H. Brunini, and was so badly damaged that Brandi was forced to beach it near Cape Forcas, Spanish Morocco. It was then attacked by with bombs and rockets by Hudsons of Nos. 48 and 233 Sqds. from Gibralter, as shown here. Ref: AIR 27/472
