On 16 June 1943 Liberator G.R.Mk.V (FL975) of No.59 Sqd, flown by Flying Officer E.E.Allen from Aldergrove, Northern Ireland, came across three U-boats in vic formation about 320 miles south-west of Land's End. An attack was made on the centre U-boat with a stick of six depth charges, in the face of intense flak, but these overshot slightly. The rear gunner fired about 120 rounds at the U-boat, but enemy flak scored four hits on the aircraft, rendering most instruments useless. Nevertheless another attack was made, this time on the U-boat on the right of the vic, thirty seconds after it had submerged, but no results were seen. There are no records of a sinking or damage to a U-boat on this day. ref: ADM/199/1420
