Thank you for the excellent information. One question of clarification...When Zemke flew the aircraft, the name Happy Warrior had not yet been applied, and also the rudder was not mid-blue. Is that right? If so, I am guessing the rudder would have followed the rest of the camouflage pattern.

I'm going to try modeling the P-47D "Oregons Britannia" that I think was flown by Hub Zemke. It also had another name "Happy Warrior" and the plane may have been flown by another pilot (I forget his name). I have appropriate decals and some photos of the actual plane and a restoration version...

Interesting that most (if not all) 1/48 kits omit that detail.

When I get the P-38 E&M manual I should be able to figure it out. My guess at the moment is that it enclosed a spring to keep the antenna wire taut.

In the photo below, what is the dark rod or tube just under the top of the rear canopy? I have never seen it in any kit, but should it be in there? One thought is that it might house a spring tensioner for the antenna wire. If that's the case, then I guess it should not be there for a plane...

Thank you Aaron. I had that in mind as my Plan B. I do have the Testors Decal Maker kit. I'll try playing with that image of the squadron patch and get it into the Decal Maker program I have on my computer. With luck I may be able to make that crazy cat in 1/32 scale.

Were WW II 5" HVARS, on Hellcats, right and left handed? If so, what were the differences? Picture or two would help a lot. Thanks.

The XP-38 had the old Curtiss decals on the prop blades (Curtiss in curly script). I have black and white photos of the XP-38, and I have a version of the decal from the web. The background color I have is dark blue. Was that right or is it supposed to be another color? In the b&w photos...

This seems to make sense since (I think) the bumper on the gunsight was also dark red-brown.

I've seen a number of photos of Fw 190 instrument panels and the leather covering of the bumpers on the top edge of the shade over the instrument panel appear to be black. But the Hasegawa instructions I have for my 1/48 model call out brown leather for that bumper. Any idea which color is...

I had a look at Hannants, and they had everything but. I couldn't seem to find a 1/48 set with RAF code letters in white (they had red, black, sky, and sea grey). They would have been 24" letters I believe. Has anybody seen such a sheet in white? They will be for a Kittyhawk III in North...

I'll also check on the exact color of the letters. It would certainly be easier to use a commercial letter set. If this doesn't work out, I'll check back.
