118 013-2....what does the -2 stand for?

It's the German (E 18) DB/BR 118 class electric locomotive. The 118 013-2 is the Deutsche Bundesbahn firm number ( registration) used from 1968. It consisted of the three-digit series/serial number (Baureihennummer), followed by a three-digit serial/sequential number ( Ordnungsnummer) 001-999 and then the check code/self-check digit ( Prüfkennziffer/Selbstkontrollziffer) follows with a hyphen.

So now you know what the 2 means there.

The digit is for checking if somebody didn't make a mistake when he was rewriting the locomotive or railway wagon number for instance. The control digit is the explement to the overtotal/checksum you get using the registration number. Each digit of the number/registration ( except the 2 at the end of course ) is multiple by 2 or 1 in sequence 121 212.

Step 1.

118 013
121 212
=
128 016

Step 2.
then each digit of the number you got by the multiplying , is summed ...

1+2+8+0+1+6 = 18

Step 3.
the last step is to round up the 18 to the next higher multiple of 10. In the case it is 20 . So 20-18=2 or 18+2=20 ... and viola.
