42-40313: B-24D-45-CO, X, Boots, 343rd Bomb Squadron

Flown by 1st Lieutenant Lawrence E. Murphy and crew (10). Briefed to fly No. 6 in the third wave attacking White IV. Took a direct flak hit in bomb bay and crashed in refinery grounds. Two gunners Sergeants Tom McGrath and Harold Yost, escaped from the flaming wreck, the former badly burned. The eight other crew men were killed.

42-40613 B-24D-80-CO, E, Pudgy, 330th Bomb Squadron

Flown by 1st Lieutenant Milton Teltser and crew (11).
Flying left wing of C force leader, briefed for White III. Flak hit in No. 2 engine on approach to bomb target of opportunity (White IV). Propeller on No. 2 would not feather. Attempted to maker for Turkey but 45 miles from the target, west of Bucharest , two Bf 109's intercepted. No. 1 engine was put out of action and a waist gunner killed by the fighter attacks. Teltser was forced to crash land the burning bomber in a maize field at Ogrezeni. Five of the crew were killed. Four survived plus 2nd Lieutenant Beaumont flying as an observer although he is not listed on the Missing Air Crew Report. All five were taken prisoner.

42-23813 B-24D-5-CO, V, Victory Ship, 68th Bomb Squadron

Flown by Captain John H. Diehl Jr and crew (9) with Lieutenant Colonel James T. Posey of the 44th Bomb Group HQ, as Blue target force commander and co-pilot. Lead of four five-plane waves. Left waist gunner Staff Sergeant Truitt Williams was killed by shell splinter when ground fire was encountered at target. Tail damaged. Encountered Bf 109's, Bf 110's and IAR 80's on withdrawal. Minor battle damage. Down at base at 2100 hours.

1Lt Gordon S. Stevens and crew (9). Briefed to fly in first element, third wave attacking Blue target. Up 0730 hours. Enemy fighters made at least two frontal attacks after target. Down at base at 2050 hours. This was a replacement aircraft sent out from England on the 23rd of July.
