Met Tom Hayden at UofI in 1961. He was organizing the various SPUs (Student Peace Unions) into the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). He was a very powerful, intelligent, and charismatic speaker. We were "friends" until 1965 when he went to Hanoi. We met again in 1968 at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. By that point he had gone too far left for me but he had maintained his basic ideals. We again parted ways when he returned to Hanoi though he did return with 4 POWs.
It was very sad to hear of his passing
