Airborne Medics

Most airborne medics carried handguns, did they actually shoot Germans with these or were they just for self-defense? Becuase I have seen pictures of German airborne medics carrying mp-40s.
Also any other info on airborne medics would be great.

If they were for self defense, would they be defending themselves from werewolves, scary things in the dark or Germans???
