Actually, there were anti-communist militias operating in Ukraine, independent of, but often cooperating with the German military.I sent the following to the party leaders:
A Teachable Moment: To quote Stephen Leacock, before you all ride "…madly off in all directions…" I would note that you all got up and applauded the "Ukrainian" individual who fought the "Russians" during WWII. Let us think for a moment about the actual history of the events in the area currently known as the Ukraine during these horrible years. There were only two sides fighting in this area: the Soviet Union and the German military. There was no Russian army or Ukrainian army. Any "Ukrainian" individuals who fought against "Russia" would have served with the German army, in this case the Waffen SS. Anyone with even a "soupçon" of knowledge of the history of the war should be aware of this. But everyone, opposition included got up and applauded. You are all guilty of being woefully ignorant of history and insensitive to the millions who died during that war.
Parliament should reflect on this carefully before you get on your soap boxes and spout off!
Jim
Thanks for the correction. As I said. It's a "teachable moment".Actually, there were anti-communist militias operating in Ukraine, independent of, but often cooperating with the German military.
Some were later accused of some of the most brutal atrocities against their own people.
Me too. It was a dumb move that I think most Canadians and certainly federal politicians who applauded on both sides of the House of Commons hope we can forgive, forget and move on. I hope lessons have been learned and that the next time Ottawa is thinking of commemorating someone they'll do a cursory history test to ensure the person in question is worthy of the intended praise.Clueless! Too busy patting themselves on the back to do even the most cursory review of readily-available history ........ as a Canadian, I am embarrassed
Yes, clueless... but so is the media. They constantly refer to individual Germans as "Nazis" when there is no evidence whatsoever that the person belonged to the National Socialist Party. When the Germans invaded Ukraine, they were first greeted as liberators. Their brutal treatment of the Ukrainians quickly turned the people against them and the possibility of having a potential ally against the Soviet Union was squandered. Lumping all of a nationality into one homogeneous group is not realistic or fair.Clueless! Not sure of the date of this video.
Can you let this Nazi stuff go? Let's get back to present day Ukraine's fight for liberation.constantly refer to individual Germans as "Nazis" when there is no evidence whatsoever…..
You mean Russia's campaign to denazify Ukraine? Can you let this Nazi stuff go? Let's get back to present day Ukraine's fight for liberation.
Somehow, I think the world already knew.UN commission finds Russians tortured Ukrainians to death
A United Nations-mandated investigative body finds Russians tortured Ukrainians so brutally that some of their victims died, and forced families to listen as they raped women next door.www.abc.net.au
It's also important how much the AFU is helping the American military improve its own tactics and capabilities. Ukraine will be instrumental in training NATO as well as American forces. I doubt North Korea or Iran are as valuable an ally as Ukraine is for us.
This guy really needs a window.Remind me again which side this guy is on...

There is only so much they can do at this stage with the war still underway and the criminals likely hiding in/protected by Russia.

Not at this point in time - however - I believe there is no statute of limitations for crimes against humanity, genocide and the like. With a Russian veto, what might be done at all in the UN?
Short answer: nothing.
Idiots...Timing is the secret of comedy….and this just couldn't t be better given the current conversation:
Russia seeks to rejoin UN's human rights council
It was expelled from the United Nations council last year after its forces invaded Ukraine.www.bbc.com
