There are large gas fields off the South and South West of Crimea. Russia has way more gas than what is in the fields but they don't
want Ukraine or anyone else exploiting them and supplying countries in Europe.
It's estimated as being around 2.3 trillion cubic metres in total.
Crimea was taken in 2014 because Ukraine was in the process of doing deals with major companies to exploit the fields.
