Reports are that Trump spoke to Zelensky twice. Once before his nearly 2 1/2 hour call with Putin and then again after. The second conversation reportedly included the leaders of France, Italy, Finland and Germany, along with high level EU (Commission and Council) leaders.

Zelensky reiterated Ukraine's positions - basically that they will not withdraw from the regions Russia has claimed and will not recognise regions occupied by Russia as anything than Ukrainian territory (including Crimea). However, he was open to a ceasefire and willing to continue to negotiate on prisoner exchanges.

For his part, Putin reiterated Russia's territorial claims to all four oblasts they're partially ocuppying and Crimea, as well as demanding that no European countries could stage troops in Ukraine and blaming NATO for starting the war. The Russian position is that they are basically willing to agree to work on their own memorandum for a peace deal. In practical terms, this means nothing. This is the same line their negotiators in Turkey have been trotting out for the past week, but they've yet to produce any concrete proposals.

Trump, for his part, seemed to be largely interested in post-war trade deals with Russia and buddying up to Putin. Curiously, the threatened harsher sanctions on Russia - which were supposed to go into force a week ago - have failed to materialise. His statement that Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations on a ceasefire is just weird - they're already doing that (that's why they're meeting in Turkey).
