I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the pro-Putin rhetoric is from people who describe themselves as "nationalists" and who deprecate pro-democracy institutions.

Agreed, there's a disturbing appreciation of autocracy and autocrats in a significant proportion of Americans. There's also a disturbing lack of understanding of American civics in many Americans.
