Actually, they did own it.
Great Britain (and France) seized that territory from the Ottoman Empire in the 1920's.
The Ottoman Turks seized that territory from the Mamluks in the 1500's under Selim I.
The Mamluks seized that territory in the 1200's from the Ayyubid dynasty.
And it goes on and on and on.
Conversely, Ukraine is not electing to give up it's land, which has been their nation in one form or another since the 800's A.D., they are being extorted by force and politics.

What I find interesting is that if as it seems Putin may reject these terms he may well have done Ukraine a favour. As even Trump will find it hard to foist a settlement on Ukraine if Russia don't want it.
