Nice! This would be the very first non-Russian origin fixed wing combat aircraft provided to Ukraine.

Hopefully this will break the seal, so to speak, leading to expedited deliveries of other more advanced/capable fighter-strike types. Zelenskyy was in France today - maybe some Mirage 2000s, as discussed in March?

However Fredendall was initially considered by Marshall, Mac Nair and Einsenhower as the cream of the cream.
A lot of generals (and admirals) were well-thought of based on their peacetime performance, but turned out mediocre or worse at war. Others were fine with brigades or divisions but failed with larger units. I'm pretty sure that it's a universal problem.

Also, the US Army at Kasserine Pass had deeper problems than its commanding general.

Putin driving Ireland closer to NATO.

I guess that just a couple of nuclear threads and Ireland will request joining Nato.

Who Dun It?

Note that in the Yom Kipper War the Iraqis went to help the Syrians, flew into the combat area without setting the proper IFF codes and lost six Migs to Syrian SAMs - then decided not to play any more.

From Avweb:

"The Russian air force had one of its worst days of the war with Ukraine and lost four aircraft but it's not clear who shot them down. An Su-35, Su-34 and two Mi-8 helicopters were destroyed within minutes of one another in the same general area of Russian territory bordering northeastern Ukraine. They were apparently all on the same strike mission against Ukraine and the ability to carry out that kind of defensive strike would have been a stunning victory for Ukraine forces. But the Ukrainians claim they didn't do it.

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukraine air force, said in a TV interview Ukraine wasn't responsible and joked that the Russians themselves might have done it. He later retracted that hypothesis but now the head of Russian mercenary Wagner Group has revived that theory. "Four planes—if you draw a circle in the places of their fall, it turns out that this circle has a diameter (and all of them lie exactly in a circle) of 40 kilometers (25 miles). … Now go on the Internet and see what kind of air defense weapon could be in the center of this circle, and then build your own versions," Prigozhin said on Telegram. Russia says it's looking for "saboteurs" on the ground in the area where the aircraft went down."

...the ministry said that Commander Vyacheslav Makarov of the 4th Motorized Rifle Brigade [was] killed trying to repel Ukrainian attacks. It said that Makarov had been leading troops from the front line...
I wonder if the colonel Makarov is related the the Army General Nikolai Yegorovich Makarov. The latter was sacked by Putin.

Commanders Makarov seem to be the red shirts of Russian military in-field leadership.

Here is an interesting development outside the actual combat area. In what can only be described as a major blow for Putin, Moldova withdraws from Russia-led alliance after 30 years.
People seem to be recognising that the ship is starting to sink, and are looking for a way out. Also people are no longer afraid of Russia, or they wouldn't dare make such a move.

Or to the general Vladimir Makarov sacked by Putin and found '' dead apparently from suicide with his shotgun ''. With such a name an APS would have been more logical.
