Presumably any F-16s would come from the US, so some covert dealings are possible. What of the desert air force, can these be restored? I assume that's why they're not scrapped.

It's funny seeing this just now.

I had a conversation earlier with a person who is convinced that there is no difference between Russian and other Cyrillic languages (Ukrainian, Bulgarian, etc.) and informed me that the Russians invented it.

When I suggested that it was the Bulgarians that introduced the Cyrillic language and speak the language close to it's original form, I was again told.that I am wrong.

Having had enough of this nonsense, I asked them if they spoke Russian to which they replied "no..."
So I said "тогава откъде знаеш - идиот си" and added (in English) "go figure it out" :lol:

The snarkier linguists will say the difference between a dialect and a language is that the latter has an army.

As for the person you had the discussion with: the linguists who specialize in Slavic languages would disagree. See, for example, Family tree and or map-like approaches to Slavic languages?

This is one of the cornerstones of the Russkiy Mir myth. The Russian language is a core and a base and all other Slavic languages are just variants based on it. And the Ukrainian language is just a dialect, of course. :rolleyes:
"Moscow is the third Rome", declared some Orthodox priest five centuries ago. Probably, 80% of the RF population believes in that. And many Russian-speaking communities in the West, unfortunately.

A brief further comment on the recent shoot-downs of the Kinzhal missile:

The technology in the Patriot missiles being used to intercept the Kinzhal is derived from the same US anti-ICBM technology developed for the USN Standard missile. In the Standard ABM missile form it is capable of intercepting ICBMs during their intermediate (exo-atmosphere) and re-entry (hopefully upper-atmosphere) stages - when the ICBM would be traveling at Mach 20+. And, although I am not familiar with the current details, back in the late-1990s and early-2000s the developmental Standard ABMs were sometimes using kinetic energy (ie non-explosive) warheads to destroy the ICBM warheads - and doing so quite successfully.

So while not 'easy' to shoot down, a Mach 10 missile is not that difficult to shoot down with modern advanced AAMs designed for the purpose - as long as the target can be spotted in time.

They can, but it can take time to get them airworthy and combat ready. Not only have they sat preserved for quite some time, but often they may be cannibalized for parts.

Here in Canada the Russian-speaking community is laying low. 1.36 million Ukrainian-Canadians, 1 million Polish-Canadians, plus nearly 180,000 Ukrainian refugees, along with the rest of us won't put up with any boastful or opinionated Russia's. The last I saw of them in the Canadian media was in March 2022.
