Russia's Federal Security Service announced a criminal case Friday against Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary organization known as the Wagner Group, claiming he incited "armed rebellion" after he claimed Russia's military killed a "huge" number of Wagner paramilitaries in an attack on a Wagner Group camp, as tensions reach a fever pitch between the paramilitary group and Moscow.

Russia's Federal Security Service announced the proceedings in a message on Telegram, alleging he incited an armed rebellion—a crime punishable by a 12 to 20 year sentence.

The Wagner Group, which has supplied weapons and military support to Russia's military, claimed in a statement on Telegram that one of its camps suffered an aerial missile attack "from the rear," meaning it was allegedly launched by Russia's military.

Russia's Ministry of Defense denied the attack in a post on the ministry's Telegram channel, saying the claim does "not correspond to reality" and amounts to an "informational provocation."

Prigozhin claimed Russia "sneakily deceived us" as the Wagner Group—which had criticized Russia's military for allegedly abandoning its front line and said last month it would withdraw some of its troops—planned to "hand over our weapons and find a solution," adding: "these scumbags did not calm down," according to a CNN translation.

Prigozhin said the Wagner Group is deciding how to respond, threatening: "the next step is ours."

He did not say where the alleged attack happened or suggest a specific motive.

Looking forward to orcs eating each other.

Given that Prigozhin has openly said was is unspeakable in Russia proper, one wonders if Putin will finally attempt to silence him. I wonder if there are enough forces that are not entangled in Ukraine that can stop Prigozhin from making serious trouble in Russia.

Okay, is it:
A cunning plan between Prigozhin and Putin to assign blame to Shoigu and Gerasimov so Putin gets to say it wasn't his fault? (AKA the get out of jail free card)
An actual armed revolt with Prigozhin wanting to be the new boss?
The Americans, using the AFU as their puppets, perfected mind control kamikaze mind-altering fruit flies (drosophila melanogaster) to create chaos, have finally succeeded?
What's behind the curtain, where Carrol Merrill is now standing?

BTW Is the Russian Army now the third best army in Russia?

All sorts of crazy happening in Russia. According to Russian TV, "Operation Fortress" has been initiated in Rostov-on-Don. The operation raises local military units to the highest state of readiness. Rostov's governor has asked people to stay indoors. Further north, the government of the Voronezh region has asked civilians to avoid the M4 motorway, which links Moscow to Rostov-on-Don, because of a military convoy.

Meanwhile, Prigpzhin has claimed that Wagner forces have moved from Ukraine into Russia and have shot down a Russian helicopter.

The BBC is running "love" updates on this page for those interested:

Latest update - local Telegram channels from Rostov-on-Don showing armed forces surrounding a police headquarters building.

Things appear to be moving very fast in the city of Rostov-on-Don, where footage on local Telegram channels appear to show armed forces surrounding a government building.
The footage - which has not been verified by the BBC - shows armed men in uniform walking around the local interior ministry's building's perimeter, as armoured vehicles surround it, including two tanks with their guns trained on it.
Reuters news agency said it had verified the location as the police headquarters building.
Meanwhile the local governor Vasily Golubev urged residents to avoid the centre of Rostov-on-Don.
"In connection with the current situation, I ask you to refrain from traveling to the city center and, if possible, not to leave your homes," he wrote on Telegram

It might be a bit late for a Night of the Long Knives. Then again, it's more likely to be a night of the Short, Rusty Knives in the Hands of the Incompetent anyway............ and then there are the cadres of Wagner forces in Africa.... where they have been Putin's only real tool to influence events there. I imagine Kiyv is filled with lots people sporting bemused looks, watching their aggressors turning on themselves

And don't forget PMC has substantial assets in the middle east, currently, too.

I can't help wonder how much events in Russia will impact the war in Ukraine. The following tidbit shows how important Rostov-on-Don might be to the Ukraine fighting:

The US thinktank the Institute of War (ISW) believes Yevgeny Prigozhin is aiming to force a leadership change within the Kremlin's defence ministry - but suggests he is "unlikely to succeed" because the Kremlin appears opposed to his action.
However any Wagner attempt to take control of Rostov-on-Don could have an impact on the war in Ukraine because Rostov is home to the Russian southern military district command, which has been key to Russia's war efforts.
The southern military district's 58th combined arms army is "currently decisively engaged in defensive operations against Ukrainian counteroffensives in southern Ukraine, and the command centre for the Russian joint group of forces in Ukraine as a whole", it says.
