I doubt if the actual Putin was anywhere near the front.
There's a lot of drones flying around. I've seen a Russian vid of 2 Ukrainian drones colliding. Sometimes, Ukrainian drones occupy the same airspace as Russian aviation. Sometimes a drone operator will take a shot at a target of opportunity.

EDIT: Or, Putin sends up a body double to look heroic flying near the front. If body double gets dead, Putin takes off to a perceived safe haven, safe from prosecution.
