So I guess very soon the Ukrainians will have a swarm of drones depart a fishing trawler in the east.

And I would change the last word of the first paragraph of that defence-blog article to supporter.

Would such a vessel be considered a BMC (Ukrainian Navy) unit, and would then convention require the converted armed trawler to raise the naval ensign or jack or before launching its attack?

Once the Ukrainian trawler self declares as a BMC vessel, does that make it fair game for any Russian SSN in the area? Of course Ukraine is more likely to forgo any of this and act in the shadows. But then are you a rogue armed ship sailing the open sea striking at will, akin to a pirate or terrorist?

Anadyr can be reached by the vessel, of course. But marine traffic is thin in that area, so it's hard to avoid detection.
Smart move for Russians.

Good questions. At the current level of technology, it's possible to launch the drones from the unmanned vessel. Naval ensign can be raised remotely as well.
