Many surnames in Russian and Ukrainian differ only by the ending. Others by something else, 2,3,4 letters or so.

It just seems that way. In fact, not only the suffixes differ, but also the roots of words - for example, there is no surname "Rudenkov" in Russian, but "Ryzhenkov". Or "Didenkov." Or "Golopupenkov." The Ukrainian origin of the surname is easy to recognize - only residents of non-Slavic origin in remote areas in the North or East could be misled.

Yes, it fooled many. Including descendants who discovered their origin in the post Soviet period only.

I can't say much about Poles, you should know better.

Just to note that while some Poles occupied high positions, indeed, other Poles were exiled or worse.

But not for being Polish, but for participating in the uprisings. At least until the 1930s.

Same with many other nationalities in the USSR.

I can still understand people with the surname "Trotsky" changing it in the 1930s. But changing a Polish or Ukrainian surname in the vast majority of cases was easy enough to recognize - it could only provoke additional suspicion.

I have an American friend whose family name is Smith but only because pre ww2 his father changed the family name from Schmitt.

I would suspect this is and was quite common.

I am not arguing about whether people changed their surnames, I am arguing about how they changed them exactly. Adding '-v' to the Ukrainian surnames 'Petrenko' or "Sidorenko" did not make them Russian, they were immediately recognized as Ukrainian, regardless of the presence of '-v'. And it was necessary to change the surname more radically - to 'Petrov' or 'Sidorov'.
