You're making the mistake of taking him as earnest.
I think Putin is calling Trump's bluff, and is ignoring talk of sanctions as TACO and equally so USN submarines. Heck, if I was Putin I'd invite the USN submarines to St. Pete's for lunch. What would startle Putin is a surge of US ground forces to the Baltic Reps, and even more so, a "yuge, bigger than ever been seen before", trache of US weapons to Ukraine.

A couple of senators have proposed a $54B aid package. We'll see what happens.

Good stuff. I have to wonder how POTUS 40 would have handled the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Reagan took no shite and less Lebanon 1984, never chickened out. Not trying to add politics here, but more historical perspective.

The circumstances are so vastly different that I'm hesitant to guess. On the one hand Reagan was unwilling to back down from Communism. On the other hand they had a hotline between the capitals and the willingness to talk through crises.

On the third hand, he was not always a friend to democracies or democratic movements.
