My first sentence was They have been stymied far far more by the willingness of the Ukrainians to defend their own country. Isn't that exactly what you are saying>

If you just got engaged to your future wife and you are driving along the road and see her trapped in a burning car you will develop inhuman strength to get the car doors open and to save her life. Other people will just drive on by as they would rather be elsewhere. The Ukrainians are in a burning car. The Russians are the other drivers.

If there is a ceasefire then by definition the Western troops cannot be a legitimate target. If the ceasefire breaks down it could be I suppose, an excuse to consider those forces to be a legitimate target.

However Putin's problem is that Russian forces would be considered legitimate targets for Western forces. It wouldn't take ground forces, the air forces alone could easily totally paralyze Russian logistic networks and destroy his command and control.

Putins ace card not yet played would be his submarine force, his surface forces would be sitting ducks should he try to use them. However submarines are all or nothing weapons, you cannot have a limited war scenario with subs. For that reason I cannot see why Putin would want to use naval warfare.
