CAIRO (AP) — A Russian-flagged tanker carrying liquefied natural gas exploded and erupted in flames before sinking in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, authorities in the North African country said Wednesday, and Russia blamed the sinking on an attack by Ukrainian sea drones.
According to the Libyan Maritime Authority, there were "sudden explosions, followed by a massive fire" on the Arctic Metagaz on Tuesday, while the LNG carrier was about 240 kilometers (150 miles) off the coast of the Libyan city of Sirte.
The tanker, carrying 61,000 tons of LNG, "completely sank" between Libya and Malta, a statement said. All 30 crew members were rescued and put on another vessel heading to the Libyan city of Benghazi, it said.
Russia's Transport Ministry said that the vessel was hit by Ukrainian sea drones launched from the Libyan coast. Ukrainian officials made no immediate comment on the accusation.

Either the Ukrainians have a new can opener drone or this failed along the frame lines.
Either way - I love it. A few more like this and the shadow fleet will find work elsewhere because they cant afford insurance - or cannot get crews.

My thinking exactly.
In any case, I would be quite surprised if there was a drone that could fly out of Ukraine, over several countries, some of whom are more than slightly suspicious of random unidentified air traffic, and find a tanker in the Med.
I'd suspect poor maintenance and somebody smoking or an electrical flaw much more likely.

I'm thinking a drone smuggled out of Ukraine, or jury-rigged sourcing commercial stuff. It's not like the Ukrainians don't know how to do that, right?
Either Ukraine finally has a detachment in the Med working on increasing insurance cost for the shadow fleet or they hired "friends" working for the cause.
I really hope they prefer attacking empty tankers - a massive oil spill is nothing the Ukrainians want to have on their hand.

Ukraine does have warships outside of the Black Sea, but I would not doubt that they have the ability to deploy Sea Babies from commercial ships in other areas.

They have been very careful so far not to sink anything with major pollutants on board, and not to harm crew, so this latest attack is out of character unless they believed 100% of the LPG would be burnt off before the ship sank.
Interesting development, somehow Ukraine has some cards now .......

A marine drone is more likely. A lot of traffic near Malta, a ship carrying/launching drones can stay hidden.
