My sense is that with his position being so fragile, he is using the war in Ukraine to buttress his position in domestic electoral politics. IOW he feels like it's his best way to retain office. It's also a sort of Mexican standoff against the Ukrainian attacks on the Russian pipeline, where Orban is seeking to appear to respond effectively -- again, for domestic political consumption in Hungary.
The fact that it will further impair Hungary's relations with the EU seems, to me, to be a problem Orban is happy to kick down the road, after his hoped-for re-election. Look strong now, ask forgiveness later.

I hope Ukraine waits till after the election to retaliate because I think Orban is trying to cause Ukraine to attack Hungary so he can claim he was right.
And when they do retaliate it should be on Orban's HQ on the night of the election after the polls have closed and Orban is preparing to declare victory even if he lost.
(And no I am not saying assassinate him - just make it very clear he can very easily become an assassination target)

The fact that Hungary intercepted and confisticated a legitimate and properly documented monetary transfer between nations will not sit well with the EU and others involved.

Today, I can't explain to myself, why did I ignore everything I read about the war history of XX century. Intense trade with victims did not stop aggressors. Maybe, it even encouraged them, in some cases at least.

The U.S. is lifting some restrictions on Russian oil and considering more actions to "unsanction" it as the conflict in Iran raises prices globally, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday.
Bessent told Fox Business that the U.S. would allow India to buy Russian barrels.
"Yesterday, Treasury agreed to let our allies in India start buying Russian oil that was already on the water," Bessent said.
"The Indians had been very good actors. We had asked them to stop buying sanctioned Russian oil this fall. They did. They were going to substitute it with U.S. oil, but to ease the temporary gap of oil around the world, we have given them permission to accept the Russian oil," he continued.
"We may unsanction other Russian oil," he added to host Larry Kudlow.
"The other thing Treasury can do here, Larry, is, there are hundreds of millions of… barrels of sanctioned crude on the water and in essence, by unsanctioning them, Treasury can create supply," Bessent said. "We are looking at that. We're going to keep a cadence of announcing measures to bring relief to the market."
Goddamned disgusting, selling out Ukrainians. Maybe don't start another needless war and the market will remain stable? Just a thought.

It appears that the temporary sanction lift is aimed at keeping India's economy stable.
Since the straights of Hormuz have been restricted due to the conflict, India's oil source has been cut off and their home reserves will only last about 45 days.
So this move looks to keep India solvent rather than benefitting Russia.
