Well, they could certainly lie about their losses, especially their losses of hardware. It's only a trifle harder to do so with the losses of people when anybody who reveals the actual numbers to the public is likely to find themselves trying to learn how to fly quickly, drugged to their eyeballs in a prison masquerading as an insane asylum, or learning the joys of drinking polonium-laced tea.
Lying about losses is one thing; lying about losses to oneself is another. The former is bad policy, but certainly not unique to Putin's regime, but the latter is utter stupidity. I suspect Putin's generals are doing both.

What always puzzled me in the Soviet system was that the stupidity was created and supported by non-stupid people. That reminds me of "The Banality of Evil" by Hanna Arendt: evil deeds done by (maybe) not inherently evil people. In the 1990s, I thought that it was over. In the late 2000s, I realised that this strange tradition had been resurrected and was beginning to flourish again.

Any predictions of an Ukrainian drone strike during the Moscow Victory Day Parade on May 9 in Red Square? I don't expect a decapitation strike on Putin personally, but strikes around Moscow, even just a drone flyover, during the parade would embarrass and humiliate Putin in front of his lackeys and enablers.

In WW2 a Beaufighter flew down the streets of Paris to drop a flag on the Arc de Triomphe as well as strafing a couple of targets. Its a fantasy I know, but wouldn't a drone dropping the Ukraine flag or even just releasing blue and yellow smoke on the parade say so much.
