I gather that the Grants used in the Western Desert were given hybrid 75mm ammunition of captured German shot fitted into captured French cases. Probably as the German shot was superior to the US shot or possibly the matching ammunition was lost at sea.

The reason was that German shells were better than US shells. British made AP shots, others usually AP shells.
