Australian P/O Warwick Brian Poulton accompanied by his German captors examines the burning remains of his Spitfire in May 1942

Poulton was shot down in 122 Squadron Spitfire Mk Vb BM241 over Pihen-lès-Guînes in combat with Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of Jagdgeschwader 26 on May 1st 1942 while on a bomber escort mission and appears to have suffered an eye inury during the incident. He remained a prisoner of war for three years before being liberated.
