I think this put all of Joe Bauger's B-17 serial numbers in one place. Unfortunately there is no date

From Joe Baugher's website "By November 30, 1941, 42 B-17Es had been delivered. "

Just total up the earlier ones and add 5-6 for the extra week

If the B-17E was delivered from 9/41 then 42 matches those accepted from 9/41 to 11/41. 60 more were accepted in december so a couple more than 42 at the time of PH attack

Was there ever any (serious) consideration of simultaneously making two. Erosions, a light high and fast descendant ofthe B-17D and the line with the more-heavily armed B-17E?

I have not read of such a version. Perhaps somebody else has.

However they were well aware of the blind spot in the tail so some sort of tail gun installation was required and
"In order to achieve better stability during the bomb run, the span of the horizontal tailplane was increased, the vertical tail was greatly increased in area, and a long dorsal fin was fitted in front of the tail. "

So you have a large increase in surface area and a small increase in frontal area aside from the changes in armament and weight.
