The Skyraider, Mauler, etc were designed as attack aircraft, with the primary (if not sole) mission of lugging heavy loads of explosives to a target then leaving them there. High altitude capability not required.

The F8B was a fighter - designed with destroying enemy aircraft at any altitude as its primary mission, with lugging bombs etc as a secondary task.
