Curious if anyone could identify the model. My guess is a Mk1/2.

Welcome to the site.

Unfortunately it is not the Spitfire but Hawker Hurricane. Judging by the spiner and prop and exhaust pipes it is the MK.II

Thank you guys for the quick reply. I assumed it was a Spitfire as my Uncle told me he flew them in the RAF.

I chatted with him on the 60th anniversary of D-Day. I asked what did he do on D-Day and said he had the day off. I thought that was incredulous as all pilots would participate. He went on to explain he had spent the previous 4 days flying to the Pas de Calais with instructions to shoot anything that moved, come back rearm and refuel and do it again.

Unfortunately I don't have the date for this picture.

I wonder if it was possible that some squadrons had a mix of Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft.

IIRC , there weren't the squadrons of the such mixed stuff. Also not all RAF squadrons and their pilots were involved in the D-day operation. Just the scheduled ones only.

Do you know the number of the squadron your uncle serviced in?

As Wurger said, not likely to have squadrons with mixed types but there were many squadrons that converted form Hurricanes to Spitfires. What you have there might be a pic in his earlier days before a possible conversion to Spits.

Dont forget the hacks. I believe it was not un comming for a sqdr to have war weary or otherwise non front line aircraft around.

In fact a lit of them did. But i doubt this picture was taken round 06-1944.

You guys are correct. My cousin got back to me today and stated he was in a number of different RAF squadrons but ended the last phase of WW2 flying sorties over France disrupting train/road/ammunition dumps of the German army. This was in preparation for D Day.

He ended his RAF career as a Flight Sergeant and did a lot of his flight training in near Oshawa, ON, Canada.
