三菱名古屋航空機のスタートは内燃機(エンジン)から始まりました。機体は
終戦時までに85機種の試作,開発機が造られました。零戦,百式司偵,一式陸攻,
飛龍など優れた飛行機を製造してきましたが,これらの名機も搭載された発動機
との相性があって,それぞれの性能を発揮しておりました。
一般に飛行機として記憶に残るのは機体,外形であり,その飛行機がどんな発
動機を積んでいようがあまり意識されません。本書は発動機を主体に書かれたも
のであり,あの名機を名機たらしめたのは,それぞれの発動機によるところ大で
あることを理解していただく為のもので,どんなに素晴らしい飛行機でも発動機
が力不足であったり,信頼性が無かったりでは十分な成果を挙げられません。
三菱の発動機は昭和初期までは確かなるものもなく,海軍をして(三菱の発動
機よ,何処え行くなどと揶揄されました。これがやがて「機体は三菱,エンジ
ンは中島」という風潮になりましたが,この後,この汚名返上を成し遂げたのが
深尾名発所長でした。それは,まず核になる三菱オリジナルのエンジンを造れと
いうことで[金星]が生まれ,以降それに改良を加えて「火星」「瑞星」という
スターエンジンが生まれました。
やがて三菱のエンジンは信頼性が高いと言う定評が得られ,攻撃機,爆撃機な
ど力強く,また長時間の飛行を必要とする機種に採用されました。かの世界一周
飛行を遂げた「ニッポン号」の金星発動機は,日本に帰りつくまで,ほとんど部
品を交換する必要がなかったと言われたほどでした。
やがて三菱の発動機は三菱機のみのものではなく,日本の,さらに世界の飛行
機に搭載して貰えるものにすべきであるというビジョンを掲げ,各発動機の改良,
派生型が開発されていきました。これらの機種は,多岐に亘るため素人では把握
しにくいのですが,本書ではその点にも配慮され,容易に理解しやすくまとめら
れております。発動機は機体と違って,外観は皆同じような形で,妙味がなく,
