本書によせて
三菱名古屋航空機のスタートは内燃機（エンジン）から始まりました。機体は
終戦時までに85機種の試作，開発機が造られました。零戦，百式司偵，一式陸攻，
飛龍など優れた飛行機を製造してきましたが，これらの名機も搭載された発動機
との相性があって，それぞれの性能を発揮しておりました。
一般に飛行機として記憶に残るのは機体，外形であり，その飛行機がどんな発
動機を積んでいようがあまり意識されません。本書は発動機を主体に書かれたも
のであり，あの名機を名機たらしめたのは，それぞれの発動機によるところ大で
あることを理解していただく為のもので，どんなに素晴らしい飛行機でも発動機
が力不足であったり，信頼性が無かったりでは十分な成果を挙げられません。
三菱の発動機は昭和初期までは確かなるものもなく，海軍をして（三菱の発動
機よ，何処え行くなどと揶揄されました。これがやがて「機体は三菱，エンジ
ンは中島」という風潮になりましたが，この後，この汚名返上を成し遂げたのが
深尾名発所長でした。それは，まず核になる三菱オリジナルのエンジンを造れと
いうことで［金星］が生まれ，以降それに改良を加えて「火星」「瑞星」という
スターエンジンが生まれました。
やがて三菱のエンジンは信頼性が高いと言う定評が得られ，攻撃機，爆撃機な
ど力強く，また長時間の飛行を必要とする機種に採用されました。かの世界一周
飛行を遂げた「ニッポン号」の金星発動機は，日本に帰りつくまで，ほとんど部
品を交換する必要がなかったと言われたほどでした。
やがて三菱の発動機は三菱機のみのものではなく，日本の，さらに世界の飛行
機に搭載して貰えるものにすべきであるというビジョンを掲げ,各発動機の改良，
派生型が開発されていきました。これらの機種は，多岐に亘るため素人では把握
しにくいのですが，本書ではその点にも配慮され，容易に理解しやすくまとめら
れております。発動機は機体と違って，外観は皆同じような形で，妙味がなく，
