A Jewish family in Europe in WWII , a father, mother, and their son, fled from the Germans. After hiding in neighbors and friends homes they decided to try to flee to Switzerland but found the pass through the mountains blocked by snow. They hid in a cave and sneaked down to the village below to steal food.

Then one day they saw what they had long feared. A group of German soldiers with tracking dogs was coming up the trail toward them. The pass blocked, there was no escape. They wrapped their arms around each other, prayed, and waited for the end.

Then suddenly a B-17 appeared. It apparently had gotten shot up and was heading for Switzerland through the pass. When it reached the Germans the crew manned their .50 cal guns and blew the troops away. The waist gunners waved at them as the big bomber thundered past.

Back in the 80's, in Paris, Texas, there was a man who had a small collection of warbirds that he used to give flight instruction. One day a car pulled up and a man got out and ran over to the B-17, hugged it, and cried. He told the above story; he was the little boy the bomber had saved.

Now THAT would make great novel!
