My first Post :D

I was just wondering why the roundels of "Dominion" air forces i.e. RAAF, RNZAF, SAAF etc, weren't displayed on aircraft in Europe or the Mediterranean in WW2. I know in the Pacific that the RAAF and RNZAF used their own roundels.

Anybody know??

RAF had a different roundel in the Far east as well, dark blue outer and light blue inner like this

Apparently to avoid confusion with the Japanese 'meatball', it's also why the RAAF used dark blue outer and white inner due to this incident:
However during World War II the inner red circle was removed when an 11 Squadron Catalina was mistaken for a Japanese aircraft by a US Navy Wildcat in the Pacific Theatre.

History of the roundel can be found on the RAF site

Thanks for the reply, but I'm still unsure as to why RAAF and SAAF roundels weren't used by Australian and South African squadrons when serving in Europe and the Med... :D

Less confusion, maybe, besides being seconded to RAF control. Most carried some sort of country logo on the a/c.

I think it was to avoid confusion as well.
