Greetings all! I have about ten days break from the work so I can focus on this project.
I began the paint job by masking and then spraying the usual colors I use for RLM 74/75/76 (VLJ 70.867/70.869/70.907). I used these colors consistently for the late war Luftwaffe aircraft before but this time it looked too dark to my eyes for Graf's plane which was described to have a faded camo in several different sources. So I decided to make my own mix after reading some sources and doing additional research into the infamous RLM colors. What a joy!
I know this is a much debated topic but I came to a decision to use a mix of 1:1 (70.867 Dark Bluegrey + 70.830 Ger. Fieldgrey) for RLM 74 and a mix of 1:1 (70.869 Basalt Grey + 70.907 Pale Grey Blue) for RLM 75. When I removed the masks there were some chipping from the previous coats but the new mixes covered all of them. Result actually satisfied me. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you everyone! So, I continued the paint job by doing some touch-up on the main camo and adding the mottling. Then, I did the fuselage band and the nose together with the wing tips.
For mottling, I first applied a 1:1 mix of VLJ 70.886 Green Grey & VLJ 70.988 Khaki for RLM 02 and then applied the previous color mixes for RLM 75 and RLM 74 respectively. The fuselage band is VLJ 70.953 Flat Yellow for RLM 27. For nose and wing tips I used VLJ 70.831 Tan Glaze for RLM 04. Both sections were painted in white before airbrushing these colors to get a proper shade. Thanks again for the opinions provided on this thread regarding RLM 04 & 27.
Landing gears are done and a gloss coat is first brushed and then airbrushed on the model, which created a nice effect of slightly fading colors in different areas. And the EagleCals arrived.
