Interesting what they removed for transit, I get the Prop and the tail empennage for space saving but the wing tips? I guess every square inch counted, probably enough to get another T-Bolt on the ship with those couple of feet removed.

I kind of wonder what's going on in this picture, for starters the cowl is off in front of the windscreen and the cockpit is open. What exactly are they doing with this thing? You certainly can't transport it on that truck sitting sideways like it is. And jgreiner is right, the bottom of the wing looks covered in oil or some such substance.
 
Came across these shots of P47 d's being transported on the CVE-21 USS Block Island (better known as USS FBI for Fighting Block Island) It looks to me that the panel behind the engine cowling is removed and the canopy opened to attach the sling for loading/unloading. The same panel is removed in the picture on post #501

Quite interesting how the black checkers have different hues and *not* in the same place. I'd wager that's because they're not all black. Notice it's a war weary airframe with no group/squadron codes.
